As the birthstone for February, Amethyst may seem an odd stone to associate with the month of all things St. Valentine, love, hearts, pink, candy and red roses. But, actually, it is the perfect stone to associate with February because it is called "The Stone of Romance".
Amethyst is said to have been the favorite gemstone of Russian empress, Catherine the Great. It is also said to have been in a ring that Cleopatra wore and was believed to have captured the hearts of both Julius Caesar and Marc Antony. Amethyst is considered the stone of Saint Valentine, the patron saint of romantic love, who was made a saint on February 14th (Valentine's Day). Legend has it that St. Valentine wore an Amethyst ring carved with the image of Cupid.
Purple is also associated with passion and what better month to make Amethyst its' birthstone than February?!
